Study made by Harvard scientists demonstrated that bald spot is an alarming sign of individual's predisposition towards cardiovascular diseases. If alopecia in a male individual is progressing in the front of the head, the danger is relative, and the disease may occur only in case of the high blood pressure. If hair loss is intensive in the top and the back of the head, such male individual may be referred to the high-risk group. Institute for Human Studies. Bald Patch and Status of Cardiovascular SystemIs it possible to evaluate your state of health looking on your hair?
Masculine secondary sexual characters include not only mustache and beard, but also peculiarities of hair growth and distribution on the body. Inclination to baldness is one of the secondary sexual characters, closely related with androgens. In general, those hormones, adding to our behaviour brutality, drive and aggressiveness, may cause some other diseases, such as heart ischemic disease, which causes more deaths in the modern world than any other illness. In this research physicians themselves became object for monitoring and study: within the project "Physicians Health Study" (USA) physicians have been observing the state of health of more than 22 thousand of their male-colleagues, who described their hair condition in the age of 45 (hair shedding in the later decades depends less from androgens). Five types of distribution of hair on the head have been determined (see picture): 1 - normal type, no bald spots; 2 - small frontal high temples; 3 - small bald patch on the crown in shape of the little tonsure (like a shaven round spot on the crown of the catholic priests); 4 - bald patch on the crown with the tonsure of bigger dimensions; 5 - big bald patch on the crown, combined with the frontal high temples.
Within the period of 11 years there were registered 1446 cases of the heart ischemic disease (infarcts, angina pectoris, affections of the heart vessels) in men with the bald patch. Risk of the development of the heart ischemic disease in men with the normal hair was taken as a starting point. It was established that in proportion as the volume of hair decreases risk of the heart ischemic disease increases: from 1,09 in men with the small frontal high temples to 1,36 in men with the big bald patches. The highest rates were established for men suffering from hair shedding and hypertension (coefficient 1,79) and for men suffering from alopecia and high cholesterol (coefficient 2,78). Researchers made unambiguous conclusion that the bald patch on the crown means the high risk of the development of the heart ischemic disease, especially in men with hypertension and/or the high cholesterol. In connection with this the fair sex could be given an advice: while giving a gift to your darling, give him a kiss in the crown and look narrowly whether any sign of the future bald patch is appearing there. It may happen that the prognosis is not too comforting, in this case your darling needs love and care to prevent development of the heart ischemic disease. Peaceful and serene life, free of stress and full of love and respect, prevents development of the heart ischemic disease. If you provide him with such conditions, it'll be the most generous gift. Certainly, it will be a dear gift as love and care must be donated for term of life and not only for an anniversary. V. Starchenko |
